

UMass Boston celebrated its 38th Commencement on Friday, June 2nd - the culmination of an inspiring year. It was a glorious day for our 2,535 graduates, and for the four individuals honored for their extraordinary careers and contributions in their chosen fields of endeavor. Honorary Doctorates were presented to: Dillard University President Marvalene Hughes; Boston Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Payzant; National Public Radio's Senior European Correspondent, Sylvia Poggioli; and, to Senator Barack Obama.

U.S. Senator Barack Obama told members of the University of Massachusetts Boston's Class of 2006 to dedicate their personal and professional lives to strengthening their communities and the nation during a keynote address to nearly 10,000 people gathered Friday for the university's 38th commencement. UMass Boston Graduating Senior Catherine Reyes

Presented by UMass Boston Chancellor Michael Collins, graduating Senior Catherine Reyes was honored with the John F. Kennedy Award for academic achievement, and delivered the student remarks. A native of Colombia who immigrated to Massachusetts in 2000, the straight-A biochemistry major spoke about the contributions immigrants make to America and the strength the nation draws from its diversity.
