Options To Look For
All players are not the same, and finding one that has the features you want, without paying for features you don't need, is your first step.
The primary options are:
[1] Wired or Wireless?
[2] If Wireless: WiFi, G3 or G4?
[3] Speakers, Headphones or connected to your stereo?
[4] Control from the front panel, or through a computer on the same network?
These are just personal preferences, and none of these options is related to whether the player can receive WUMB's live stream, so I can't give you any guidance here. See "Finding Our Stream" below for a discussion of that issue.
It would be great if we had the budget to buy one of each and every streaming appliance on the market and test them all right here at WUMB. (heh, heh. . . that's not gonna to happen : ~ ). But we'll give you some guidance here to get you started on the right path.
One easy way to start is to look through the list of players available today at Amazon.com in the search box to the right. You'll see a plethora of choices, with really good descriptions of the features of each unit, and good pricing. If you find something you like there, Amazon will make a small donation to WUMB to thank you for your purchase! What's not to like about that? Another good reason to purchase there is their liberal return policy. If you can't get the device to receive our stream, they'll take it back, no questions asked.
Finding Our Stream On Your New Device
Some of the units come with their own lists of "internet radio stations", and WUMB may (or may not) be in that manufacturer's list. Most of the units will let you provide a "direct URL" for streams that are not in the provided lists, and then the problem is solved. Be aware, however, that some of these devices require that the owner "subscribe" to a service in order to add stations. Once you have your device in-hand, here are two different internet addresses you can try:
http://live365.com/play/wumb919fast
http://216.235.81.102:15442
The first one works best if your player supports "redirection". The second address requires that your network allow access to "high-numbered ports".
Spreading The Word
Let us know when you are successful, and we'll add your success story to this page. Send us the name of the player you like, and the steps you used to get it to work, and you can help another WUMB listener. It's that "Each One Teach One" thing.
