WUMB September Program Guide

New Releases

Isn’t it ironic that this long cruel Winter (which took forever) is finally over and already Spring is flying by?  As I’m writing this we’re looking ahead to May, which in turn, leads to the Summer.  So far 2015 has been tremendous for new music and I can’t see why it won’t stay the course or perhaps get even better!  Here are some new releases that just came out over the last few weeks.  If you missed them, give them a listen and see what you think!

Calexico Edge of the Sun.  It’s hard to believe this group started off as an all instrumental group.  Founding member Joey Burns has done an amazing job of blending the Tex/Mex sound they’re known for along with keeping the group contemporary.  This is another solid release from Calexico.

Tom Russell The Rose of Roscrae.  Speaking of Tex/Mex, nobody does it better than Tom Russell.  In essence this is a double disc Cowboy/Folk opera featuring Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, Ramblin’ Jack and more.  What could be cooler than that?

Mavis Staples Your Good Fortune.  This is a new EP from Mavis.  The last couple of releases she’s teamed with Jeff Tweedy of Wilco as Producer.  This time she’s got young artist Son Little producer for her.
Here are some releases that are coming out in the next few weeks that we hope are worthy:

May 5th Mandolin Orange Such Jubilee.  Carolina based duo of Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz.  They are extraordinary and I can assure you this album is fantastic.  By the time you read this we’ll have already had this on the air so do yourself a favor and give them a listen!

May 12th The Tallest Man on Earth Dark Bird is Home.  Swedish singer-songwriter Kristian Mattson, a.k.a. The Tallest Man on Earth, has taken the stripped down approach on previous releases.  He still does that on this new one but he’s also incorporated some different elements that I think are interesting.

May 12th Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell The Traveling Kind.  Let’s put it this way:  Emmylou Harris + Rodney Crowell + being produced by Joe Henry = astonishingly good record.  Make sense?

May 19th The Milk Carton Kids Monterey.  I actually haven’t heard much from this album yet but Kenneth Patengale and Joey Ryan have yet to disappoint me.

May 26th Eilen Jewell Sundown Over Ghost Town.  As you read this we’re already playing this album.  This is a typical record from Eilen in that she’s got a killer band behind her and they stay true to all this Country/Honky Tonk/Folk/Roots music.  It’s terrific!

And with that, we’re almost into Summer!  We’ve got a LOT of stuff planned.  I can’t thank you enough for supporting the station.  We’re going to put our money where our mouth is put our resources into some excellent Programming over the coming months.  I can’t divulge too much at the moment but I will give you a hint as to one:  We’re going to be bringing back a show that WUMB used to produce years ago.  Got a guess?  Unfortunately that’s all I can give you for the moment…stay tuned!

Thanks again for supporting and listening to WUMB…we couldn’t do it without you!
