WUMB May Program Guide

Who is Dave Cobb?

If you’re like me, there are probably multiple components to the process of making music that fascinate you.  For reasons unbeknownst to me, I have always been fascinated by the role of the Producer (in fact, I’ve written many an article just like this about my fascination).  One producer whose name is surfacing more than any other these days is Dave Cobb.

Who is Dave Cobb?  Well…simply put he’s a musician who turned Producer.  He was born in Georgia and now resides in West Nashville.  When you hear him talk about music he’s incredibly passionate.  He likes to talk about his influences of the classic country he was raised on, and would eventually pursue as a career until he realized he never really liked being on the road.  The way he describes it now is that he gets to be a part of many bands.  He has the ability to work with various styles while keeping a home base where he lives with his family.

Here’s why we took notice of Dave Cobb:  Jason Isbell’s Southeastern, Sturgill Simpson’s Metamodern Sounds in Country Music and his role in Dead Man’s Town: A Tribute to Born in the U.S.A.  These albums jumped off the page to all of us at WUMB and are currently regarded as classics even though they all came out over the last couple of years.

Here are the projects we’re currently playing that he’s produced:  Chris Stapleton Traveler, Little Neon Limelight from Houndmouth and Kristin Diable’s Create Your Own Mythology.  They’re all impressive releases in their own right.

Here are the artists he’s going to be working with in the future:  Honey Honey’s new album 3, Sturgill Simpson’s eventual follow up, and the next release from Lake Street Dive.  All fairly impressive.

So as of right now Dave is the hot producer in Nashville.  It’s easy to critique the music scene that’s happening there but you can’t deny the skills that Dave has in the Producers chair.  Give some of his work a listen and see what you think for yourself!

Thanks for listening and supporting WUMB!
