WUMB December Program Guide

Traditional Folk

If you like your folk music old-time, with a bit of swing and a country twang, be sure to tune in to Traditional Folk on Sunday nights from 9:00pm to midnight.  Each week Jon Gersh spins a wide variety of songs that he has gathered under a big tent he calls “Mondo hillbilly… vintage blues, bluegrass, old time country, country and western, western and swing, honky-tonk, rockabilly, truck driving and drinking songs.”  Other weekly features include Jon’s Worst Country Song, new album previews, and special features on all kinds of vintage and modern old-time and traditional country music.gal holidayIn November you’ll get a preview of the new Gal Holiday album, Jon says, “It’s good honky-tonk.”  And you won’t want to miss the show on November 8, when he will air “a little feature of a ‘live’ Hank Williams radio show. It’s an entire ‘health and happiness’ show from the early 1950s.”

Jon’s love for this music began early with a Doc Watson recording of “Shady Grove,” and he’s been “collecting, singing, playing banjo and generally obsessing about the music” ever since.  As a member of both Planet Banjo and the Dixie Butterhounds, Jon also keeps it alive on the Boston area folk scene.  You can read much more about Jon on his WUMB Announcers page.

So mark your calendar for Traditional Folk, Sunday nights from 9-midnight.
