Acoustic Sunrise is Back on WUMB!

Acoustic Sunrise, WUMB’s Sunday morning mix of favorites from vintage to brand-new, has returned to the airwaves, hosted by local folk performer Buffie Groves.  Buffie is bringing “a little bit of everything” to the Acoustic Sunrise playlist, and her strategy for choosing tracks is simple – if she likes it, she’ll play it!  Of course, she hopes that you will like it, too, and along the way she’ll offer background and interesting bits of information that will add to your enjoyment of the songs.

So tune in every Sunday morning from 8 a.m. – noon, or listen live on the Web at wumb.org, and be a part of the Acoustic Sunrise community!

WUMB Announces the first Fall Music Weekend!

WUMB will host the very first Fall Acoustic Music Weekend October 7 – 9 at the Grotonwood Conference Center in Groton, MA.  Join us at this acoustic music retreat nestled within the beautiful New England autumn woods for a full schedule of classes, concerts, and great guided and free-style jam sessions. Pete & Maura Kennedy will help us launch this new venture, joined by fellow instructors Bob Franke, Martin Grosswendt, Lorraine and Bennett Hammond, Sally Rogers and sound guru John Doerschuk.  For over 20 years WUMB has been sponsoring adult Acoustic Music Camps, and we are so excited this year to be able to offer a weekend in the fall.

Come and help us start a new tradition! For all of the details, and to reserve your place, please visit the SAMW Website, or call 617-287-6900.

For over 20 years WUMB has been sponsoring adult Acoustic Music Camps.  We began with the Summer Acoustic Music Week (SAMW), which was so successful that it quickly grew into two weeks each summer!  Then in 2013 we added a Winter Weekend, and are now preparing for its 5th year.  And this year we are launching the first ever Fall Weekend, as the demand for our camps continues to grow within the WUMB and larger folk music community.  The success of these camps continues to be a source of pride and a significant part of the WUMB mission to provide listeners with opportunities to share and enjoy folk and acoustic music in all parts of their lives. The WUMB Annual BBQ – Great Food, Great Music and Great Support for WUMB Radio!

On June 12, over 100 listeners and supporters of WUMB gathered at Mother’s Rest on Carson Beach in Dorchester to socialize, eat, and listen to a fantastic concert from Tim O’Brien, the featured performer at this year’s annual WUMB BBQ.  The delicious food was provided by Blue Ribbon BBQ, and though the wind threatened to blow the plates off the tables it was welcome under the bright sunshine.  WUMB staff and announcers mingled with listeners, a very good time was had by all, and proceeds from the event will help to fund programming at WUMB.  Over 50% of WUMB’s operating budget is provided by contributions from listeners, and this year’s BBQ was a terrific way to party with friends while providing essential support for the station.

So watch for next year’s announcement, and get ready to join us for food, fun and terrific music, all in support of WUMB!

SAMW Broadcasts and a Thank You

Before I start…THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to WUMB over the past year, and specifically the more recent End of Fiscal Year Fundraiser.  We’ve just started a new fiscal year here at the station and your generous support will allow us to do bigger and better things this year!  We simply cannot say thank you enough.

Summer Reading with Dave Palmater

Really, how many Danielle Steele novels can you read in one summer? If you’re looking for some light, but educational, late summer reading, I have some suggestions. And cheap ones, because, I’ll admit it, I haunt the book racks in the Dollar Stores, Under 5s and Job Lot stores of all varieties. You probably know that books, once they leave the shelves of your local book store, hit the remainder table. Their next stop, before becoming recycling, or door stops, or something, is the Dollar Store. There, for a buck or so, you can find some enjoyable reading now that you’ve consumed that stack of paperbacks that you’ve been toting from beach to beach. Here are a few of my favorite “cheapo” finds. Read More…

Notes from the Program Director

Hello and I hope you’re doing well as we finally head back into warmer climates!  Here are some notes from programming here at WUMB….

I really hope you enjoyed our Day of Dylan this past Tuesday, May 24th.  We put together an entire day of programming to pay tribute to the one and only Bob Dylan.  We got to play an amazing array of covers and originals throughout the day to present a really unique birthday celebration.  It’s support from listeners just like you that allows us to take chances and do something a little outside the box.  So…thank you! SAMW is Right Around the Corner

Summer Acoustic Music Week is back and better than ever! In a little over a month, SAMW will be kicking off its 21st year along the beautiful shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Week 1 will go from July 10-16 and week 2 will be August 14-20. Students will be joined by our 14 fabulous teachers as they jam, workshop, collaborate and learn together. This year we also welcome the incredible Hubby Jenkins to the SAMW family. Jenkins will be teaching African American Music, Stories, History and Music of Joe and Odell Thompson on Banjo during week two. No matter your skill or experience, you are guaranteed to have a blast at SAMW and make summer musical memories that will last a lifetime.

Be sure to check out our website, wumb.org/samw/home/ for more information on classes and instructors.

This year’s SAMW has sold out in record time and we couldn’t be happier! Both weeks are now full, but if you missed out on signing up and would like to be placed on the waiting list, call 617-287-6915. Waiting list spots are first come first served basis on availability, and being on the waiting list does not guarantee you a spot at SAMW 2016. But remember, there’s always next year!
