WUMB May Program Guide

Here’s What’s Happening on Celtic Twilight in August!

On August 6 we will feature the Welsh band Calan (which means start of the month or year), which got together initially in 2006. They are five young musicians who together have brought a fresh and vibrant sound to trad Welsh music. Once again, a new generation is reinterpreting great trad music. Their performances include step dancing as well as Welch jigs, reels and hornpipes. Also they sing trad songs and their own compositions written in trad style.

On August13 we’ll honor Donal Lunny, an Irish folk musician, composer and producer who for five decades has been an innovative force in Irish trad music. Donal plays left-handed guitar and bouzouki, keyboards and bodhran. He is a founding member of the legendary bands Planxty, Moving Hearts, Coolfin and Mozaik. Also, we will celebrate the birthday of Madelaine Edith Prior from Blackpool, Lancashire. She is the lead singer of Steeleye Span, Britain’s legendary folk-rock band. In 2001 Maddy received the MBE, Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for her contributions to the arts.

On August 20 our featured artist will be André Brunet, a Québécois fiddler born in Lacolle, Québec. In 1997 he joined the popular Québécois band, La Bottine Souriante, and toured the world with them for 10 years. In 2008, at Canada’s Grand Master’s Fiddling Competition Andre took first place, earning the title of “Grand Master of Canada” the first Québécois to do so. He is a wonderful ambassador of Québec’s rich fiddling heritage. Most recently Andre has joined Celtic Fiddle Festival with Kevin Burke, Christian Lemaître and Jed Foley.

And finally, on August 27 we will celebrate the birthday of the late John Cunningham, one of Scotland’s best fiddlers and noted for his dazzling speed and deft light-fingered touch. John was also a composer of tunes and a music producer. He was one of the founding members of Silly Wizard, along with his brother Phil. John passed away in 2003.
