WUMB September Program Guide

Birthday Bonanza on Celtic Twilight!

This month is all about birthdays! We will celebrate the birthday of Liam Clancy, who Bob Dylan regarded as the greatest ballad singer ever! Liam was a central figure in the 1960’s folk revival as a member of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem  group. I had the pleasure of interviewing him on air back in the early 90’s and he not only sang but recited Yates on air. It was fantastic.  We’ll have a birthday celebration of Irish singer and actor Ronnie Drew, who achieved international fame during a 50-year career as lead singer of the Dubliners. He was recognizable for his long beard and voice, described once as, “like the sound of coal being crushed under a door!”  We’ll say happy birthday to two-time Grammy nominee Maura O’Connell, known for her contemporary interpretations of Irish folk songs influenced by American Bluegrass and Country.  We’ll celebrate the birthday of Scottish-born singer, Eric Bogle, who started writing poetry (his first love) at age 8 and emigrated to Australia at age 25. He is known for writing two of the best, most poignant, anti-war songs ever composed:  And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda, and No Man’ s Land.  And we will celebrate the birthday of singer, co-founder of acclaimed band DeDanann, and internationally-known Irish Trad Artist and actor Dolores Keane.  Renowned for her deep and melodic voice, she was described by American singer Nanci Griffith as,” the queen of the soul of Ireland, she has a sacred voice.” Please join me this month in celebrating all of these wonderful artists!
