WUMB November Program Guide

This Month on Celtic Twilight

On March 4 we honor the birthday this week of British singer/songwriter Steve Tilston, known for his solo albums and his work with Maggie Boyle. For decades Steve has been in the forefront of the London folk scene.

On March 11 we remember the birthday of Boston-born accordion player Joe Derrane, who as a young man played at the Irish dance halls in Boston. When the dance halls faded in the late 50’s Joe put away his accordion and didn’t play for decades. When Joe was invited to play at the Wolf Trap festival in Virginia he agreed, thinking it would be his final performance. He received great acclaim and thus began again his musical second career. Joe Derrane received the National Heritage Fellowship in 2004, the highest honor in folk and traditional arts.

On March 18 we are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day! We chronicle music from the early days of recordings to the present with legends such as fiddlers Michael Coleman and Hugh Gillespie from the 1920’s, to current internationally popular bands such as Lunasa and Dervish.

Finally, March 25 is all about “The Songs of Emigration.” We will explore some of the many Celtic songs written about leaving Ireland and going to the new world, performed by artists such as Karan Casey, John Doyle, Green Fields of America and Cherish the Ladies.
