WUMB October Program Guide

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Yeah, I like Christmas and holiday music. I’m a sucker for the stuff. Even though the real world seldom, if ever, lives up to the messages of peace and harmony delivered in the classics by Irving Berlin, Mel Tormé and Gene Autry, it’s nice to aspire to. They make me happy. Plus, holiday songs can be downright weird and creative. And practically every artist on WUMB’s regular playlists has at least one!

Case in point, Bob Dylan’s Christmas in the Heart. His take on “Must Be Santa”, based on a German drinking song, is a lesson in not taking yourself too seriously, during the holiday season or anytime. In fact, you could say that about the whole record, the proceeds of which he donates to charity. James Brown also put out a record in 1966 called James Brown Sings Christmas Songs that is so quintessentially James Brown, complete with his trademark shrieks and hollers, that I’d be remiss not to play it for you. And who can forget the brilliant originals that are themselves classics, like Dolly Parton’s “Coat of Many Colors” or Joni Mitchell’s “River”? Or John Prine? Or Charles Brown?

We’ll hear them and much more this season on the Morning Show. In fact, I’ve got 4 hours of nothing but Christmas and holiday songs in the works for Christmas morning, which is a Tuesday this year.

I wish you and yours the best this holiday season, whatever you celebrate and recognize, or not. And thank you from all of us at WUMB for your support during 2018!

Happy Holidays,

~ Brendan
