WUMB May Program Guide

WUMB’s Annual International Women’s Day Celebration

Some of my favorite artists and musicians happen to be women. Mary Gauthier, Lucinda Williams, Ani DiFranco, Brandi Carlile, Emmylou Harris…. The list of women making insightful, deep music today and for years could go on and on. Then there’s Odetta, Joan Baez, Sandy Denny, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, etc. who helped shape 20th century — and now 21st century — culture. And I’m a sucker for the blues so I can’t leave out Bessie Smith, Victoria Spivey, Memphis Minnie, Koko Taylor and others who challenged the boys’ club machismo prevalent in the genre, and influenced all who followed. As far as classic country goes, there’s no one better than Maybelle Carter, Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and Wanda Jackson in my book.

WUMB will celebrate these women and many more for our annual International Women’s Day celebration on Friday, March 8th. From 6 AM through 9 PM, every minute of every hour will highlight women artists ranging across the history of recorded music. Whether it’s the women who have impacted our culture for years and decades already, or artists whose brilliant work we’re becoming familiar with now — Brittany Howard,  Alynda Segarra, Rhiannon Giddens, Margo Price, Laura Marling — WUMB will thank them with a full day of their music.

Tune in on Friday, March 8th for International Women’s Day on WUMB. I’ll get the features started on the Morning Show beginning at 6!
