The Influence and Legacy of Hank Williams Sr. on the 96th Anniversary of His Birth

Hank Williams Sr.’s life is a tale of incredible talent, artistic vision, influence, and career success. His songs and recordings have influenced many of the giants of 20th (and 21st) century songwriting, from Bob Dylan to Merle Haggard, Chuck Berry to Norah Jones. Williams’ life was also one fraught with pain and addiction, ultimately leading to his lonely demise in the back seat of a Cadillac at the age of 29. Posthumously, Williams has been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was also awarded a Pulitzer Prize special citation in 2010 for his role in “transforming country music into a major musical and cultural force in American life.” The lessons we can learn through Williams’ art and his struggles transcend eras and cross generations.

On September 17th of this year, it’ll be the 96th anniversary of the birth Hank Williams Sr. WUMB will pay tribute to the man by featuring his own recordings, as well as interpretations by other artists from varied genres, all throughout the week of the 15th. The Morning Show in particular will focus on where Hank came from, his own influences, and will highlight how his approach to songwriting has shaped the craft for all who follow in his wake.

Tune for all things Hank Williams Sr., who will be the Artist of the Week, September 16th through the 20th, on WUMB!
