WUMB December Program Guide

As hard as it is to believe it’s here again, the Hillbilly Christmas Extravaganza is back the Saturday before Christmas, 12/21 at 9PM Eastern.  For the first few years of this idiosyncratic undertaking, we couldn’t fill three hours with Christmas songs!   We would fill in with the occasional “stretches,” such as fiddle tunes named “Breaking Up Christmas” or “Frosty Morn.”  Oh, we might still do a few like that…since the fiddle is still king on the Dixie Bee Line However, we’ve still been collecting.  How many people do you know that are still collecting CDs and vinyl?  Not too many!   Well, I have to admit, the younger generation has discovered the beauty of vinyl to some extent, issuing new pressings.  But the trend is terminal, most everything is digital now.  Well, I’ve digitized a whole bunch of Christmas songs from all these source materials, finally enough to fill up a three hour show.  So I am sincerely hoping that you will join us on the Saturday before Christmas for a special edition of the Dixie Bee Line.  We’ll start out in New Orleans, and hit all the targets in Hillbilly-dom.  Even Leadbelly has an old blues version of “Christmas Day.”  But certainly Burl Ives, the Louvin Brothers, Ernest Tubb, Johnny Horton, John Prine, Doc Watson, even some Western Swing Christmas schtick with Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys (ah!).  We’ll have Rootin’ Tootin’ Santa Claus, Truckin’ Trees for Christmas, and the best-ever version of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”  Some heart-warming beauties, like the awesome “Christmas Lullaby” from Doc Watson, to some real head-scratchers like “Santa Claus, Jr.”… I guarantee you’ve never heard this one before.

So Ho, Ho, Ho to all!  Or “Oy, Oy, Oy,” as appropriate   unknown.png

Please join us Sat 12/21 9PM Eastern, sharp.  With the most sincere wishes of the season,
