WUMB September Program Guide

Happy Birthday to the Boss!!

I can’t believe it’s September already! Being a longtime Bruce Springsteen fan, I always remember his birthday is September 23rd. He’ll be 71…can you believe it?  Here are videos for my top five Bruce songs…what are yours? Let me know in the comment box below, and I’ll put together a list of YOUR favorites!

These aren’t in any particular order:
“4th Of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)” from The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle
Of course the best thing about this song is the late Danny Federici’s gorgeous accordion playing. I could listen to this in the dead of winter and immediately smell the ocean and roasting peanuts. Bruce is known for creating vivid imagery in his songs, this is one of the strongest examples!

“If I Should Fall Behind” from Lucky Town
Bruce knows how to write a love song and this is one of the best. Usually it’s performed as a duet with his wife and bandmate Patti Scialfa but in this video version the whole band takes a verse. It ends up being a love song to his band which is lovely as they’ve been together for decades.

“Thunder Road” from Born To Run
A career defining song from a career defining album. A highlight of Bruce’s live shows, this is a true rock & roll anthem that only gets better with age. Now the big question, does Mary run back inside or get in the car??

“Badlands” from Darkness On The Edge Of Town
This song takes off like a rocket and and sounds to me like it could have been an early influence on the Clash when they wrote London Calling (which came out a year after Darkness). Same intensity, same joyous abandon that makes you want to sing and dance and raise your fists in the air.

“My City Of Ruins” from The Rising
NYC  needed Bruce Springsteen after 9/11, The Rising was a record of grief and hope and recovery. This is a very special performance from New Orleans, a city that needed Bruce on the road to their recovery as well. If you ever need inspiration to just keep putting one foot in front of the other, give this a listen.
