Collaboration as Mentorship in Brazil

I’ve always admired the way so many in the Brazilian musical community make a point of encouraging young artists by working with them in collaborations of various sorts to help them get a start- Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa and many other come to mind. Here is a link to a youtube video made during a studio session a few years ago that I’ve had on my list of favorites for a long time. It’s a song that the great accordionist Dominguinhos wrote and performed himself called “Arrebol” (rough translation is “afterglow” or sunset)- it was a bit of a hit in Brazil, but has been a song much loved by musicians who know his music for years, and this is him playing it with a younger artist, now a major star in his own right, Lenine, in a relaxed moment that shows the love between them- the master and his equally masterful younger counterpart. You’ll see that it’s not at all necessary to understand Portuguese to appreciate what’s happening..

I’ll try to post links to more videos in future.
Let me know if you enjoy it –
