• Singing the Blues: Techniques from Blues for non-Blues singers

  • with Scott Ainslie

African-American singers brought a wide¬†palette¬†of vocal sounds to the job of singing a song. From my perspective, as a white blues singer, what I hear is the use of techniques we all use all the time to express emotion in speech being applied to the delivery of a song. This participatory class will outline and coach you in these techniques and explore their application in the context of a songs you already sing, with the aim of bringing out the emotion of the lines. This is a workshop class: bring a couple of songs you already play and sing (they needn’t be blues) and we will try using these techniques in developing ‘readings’ of the lines that are more effective at creating a wider range and contrast of emotions in the listeners.
