• Writing in a Tradition: New Songs that Sound Old

  • with Kate Long

As a writing coach rooted in Appalachian traditional music, I’ve spent years exploring the question, “What makes a song sound timeless?” I’ll pass my findings on to you! We’ll look hallmarks of traditional lyric and melody and I’ll help you apply that framework to your own ideas, paring away as well as adding. We’ll use classic ballads, hymns and songs as models, paired with examples by modern songwriters like Jean Ritchie, Hazel Dickens, John Lilly, and Diana Jones, plus some of my own songs.
