  • Staying Together….

So much in our music community has changed, and is changing — it’s hard to keep track of it all!  So we’re going to try to help — here you’ll find listings and descriptions of the music, services and other events that SAMW folks are making and participating in online. This post will be updated regularly, so check back often!  And if there is something you’re involved with that you’d like to see listed here, please email Buffie at ellenbgroves@comcast.net.

WUMB’s February SAMW Faculty Concert will feature Brooks Williams!

Don’t miss the opportunity to see Brooks live in this hour-long online concert on February 25 at 8:00pm.  Register by clicking here.  Read more about this concert here.

From Alastair Moock: I’m continuing to teach online guitar and songwriting classes, music classes for kids, and virtual school shows on social justice. Give a shout if you want to know more.

Kerri Powers has put up a video with a message for all of us, plus a NEW SONG!  Watch it here: https://youtu.be/lWNjd61yLwI

From Ryan Lee Crosby:  I’m teaching an online class on Zoom that focuses primarily on music from Mississippi, specifically the Bentonia, Delta and North Mississippi styles. Thus far, we’ve looked at songs by Jessie Mae Hemphill, Skip James, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes and Eddie “One String” Jones. Songs have been arranged for 6 string guitar, lap style dobro and the one string cigar box! In the future, we will be looking at songs by Fred McDowell, Robert Belfour and Muddy Waters, as well as many others. We’ve got a nice, friendly group that meets weekly, not only with SAMW regulars, but additional guitar players from all over the US!
We are currently meeting every Monday evening at 7:30 EDT. The rate for each class is $25 and includes a weekly meeting of about 60-75 minutes, along with tablature and play along video clips for everything we cover. All levels are welcome. For more information, email me at lessons@ryanleecrosby.com or sign up at www.patreon.com/ryanleecrosby.

Cosy Sheridan and Charlie Koch are still doing their Facebook Live shows on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 AM.  See them on Cosy’s YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/user/CosySheridanMusic

From Helen Engelhardt: I’ve been producing a half hour folk music show that is streamed alternate weekends (2nd and 4th) of every month from www.kaad-lp.org, a community radio station in Sonora CA. It’s called Passing Through and is broadcast at noon California time. Most of our community lives on the east coast, so that would be 3pm. It’s a show that combines history with the music. I’ve focused on the life and music of Pete Seeger in the first 7 shows; the 8th and 9th, are the first two in my second series based on a new book called Music is Power: Popular Song, Social Justice and the Will to Change.  #9, for example, explores the music and relationships between Phil Ochs, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and Phil Sloan. #10 will be dedicated to Leslie Gore and Janis Ian. #9 is the one that is airing now.

Helen also has a video up as part of the NEFFA Virtual Festival.

Dan Tappan hosts “Ellen Schmidt’s Virtual Open Mike” every other week on the 1st, 3rd (& 5th) Mondays of the month at 7pm.  You can sign up by adding your name to the online SignupGenius signup sheet, or just listen live at https://www.youtube.com/user/dantappan/live.  You’ll also find the videos there for past open mikes.

Guy Davis is doing a live show on Facebook every morning at 10am, about 20 minutes, Sunday through Friday. He skips Saturdays. It is on his Kokomo Kid page.

From Rich DelGrosso:  I am working with students every day. If anybody is interested in mandolin they may set-up a lesson through my website: https://www.mandolinblues.com/lessons.html
I hope to stay connected with y’all.
All be safe and well! Virtual bear hugs!

Cece Borjeson has submitted videos for the NEFFA “Virtual Festival,” for which they are putting up videos from people who would have been participating in NEFFA this year.  Videos will begin going up on Friday, April 24 and the virtual Festival will run through Sunday.  Right now there’s no posted lineup, but other SAMW folks were scheduled for NEFFA this year, so you might see them as well! (The Festival is over, but the videos are still up on Vimeo.)

From Rolly Brown:  I’m doing short (4 songs) “Facebook Live” concerts every Tuesday, Thurs, and Saturday at 3 p.m., and Sunday at 10:30 a.m.  AFAIK, the links only exist after the concert begins, but folks can go to my page, https://www.facebook.com/rollybrown.  Hit the “get reminder” button on the official “FB Live” notice!  All of my concerts are being archived here.

From Pam Weeks:
Hi folks,
I thought some of you might like to see a short concert I created with help from 317 Main Community Music Center. In the sidebar you will find other concerts by Teaching Artists at the center. I hope you enjoy!

Be well,
Pam

From Marilyn Miller: I have been doing a ‘facebook live‘ event for about 30 minutes every Sunday at 1pm est. It is a concert format, but I do encourage people to play and sing along at home!

From Sally Rogers: I am (for the foreseeable future) presenting “A Song a Day Keeps the Virus Away” weekdays at 4PM on my Facebook page, facebook.com/salrog. Each day I sing one song and give a little background of the song. 10 minutes max, usually less.  The songs stay posted on my Facebook page after the live performance.

Mel Green has put his Wake Up and Smell the Poetry feature from January, 2020 up on You Tube, and is posting songs on his Facebook page.

From Bob Halperin: I’m teaching on-line: Facebook: Bob Halperin – Guitar Teacher

From Ryan Lee Crosby: I have been teaching lots of private guitar lessons on Zoom, Facetime and Google Hangouts…but have recently begun putting together material to offer a weekly group class on Zoom that builds on what I offered at last year’s Blues Music Camp – Bentonia style blues, Hill Country and Lap Style slide guitar blues. I was also thinking about offering a “Blues Boot Camp” that would give people a chance to play songs by Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker, as well as songs by Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, Robert Belfour and others. If anyone is interested in this, they can email me at lessons@ryanleecrosby.com.

I am also livestreaming on my social media sites:
https://www.instagram.com/ryanleecrosby
https://www.facebook.com/ryanleecrosbymusic
https://www.facebook.com/ryanleecrosby

I’ve been writing down some new guitar lessons, too… but in the meantime, I’ve got a couple of published blues guitar articles in Premier Guitar magazine at https://www.premierguitar.com/authors/991-ryan-lee-crosby.
